About us
Emelia D is a contemporary ready-to-wear brand based in Cape Town, South Africa, creating menswear and womenswear through an African lens. Rooted in storytelling, colour, and craftsmanship, the brand creates thoughtfully crafted clothing that celebrates individuality and tells meaningful stories.
Each collection explores the relationship between identity, culture, and self-expression, bringing confidence, joy, and a sense of authenticity to the people who wear it. Emelia D embraces a slower approach to fashion, producing pieces intended to be worn, treasured, and become part of the wearer's story.
Founded by designer Dorcas Mutombo, whose Congolese heritage informs her creative perspective, Emelia D celebrates the richness of African stories through contemporary design, expressive colour, and thoughtful craftsmanship. The brand draws inspiration from culture, memory, and the beauty of everyday self-expression.
Designed and made in Cape Town, Emelia D produces small collections with an emphasis on quality, longevity, and meaningful design.
Don't Just Get Dressed — Wear Your Story.
Our Mission
Our mission is to create clothing that people form lasting relationships with.
We believe in fashion that brings joy, inspires confidence, and celebrates individuality. Guided by craftsmanship and a thoughtful approach to design, we create pieces intended to be worn, treasured, and passed on.
As we grow, we remain committed to preserving the human element of fashion and contributing to a culture that values creativity, beauty, and meaning over excess.
The Designer
Emelia D was founded by designer and creative director Dorcas Mutombo, a Congolese-born designer based in Cape Town, South Africa.
The brand began during her second year of fashion school, where she designed and sold T-shirts while developing her creative voice. Following a pause during the COVID-19 pandemic, Emelia D was relaunched in 2022 with R3,000 and a commitment to building something meaningful. Over the next three years, markets became the foundation of the business, allowing Dorcas to build lasting relationships with customers and gain a deep understanding of the people who wear her work.
The name Emelia D is deeply personal. Combining Emily and Dorcas, it also honours the memory of Dorcas' grandfather, who affectionately called her namesake Emelia. More than a name, it is a tribute to family, memory, and the stories that shape us — values that continue to influence the spirit of the brand today.
Since relaunching, Emelia D has grown from a market stall into an award-winning fashion label. Dorcas was recognised with the Kamers People's People's Award and has participated in numerous exhibitions and competitions, including being named a finalist in the TWYG Sustainable Fashion Awards and the Allfashion Sourcing Young Designer Competition. In 2026, she won the South African Fashion Week Scouting Menswear Competition, further establishing Emelia D as a distinctive voice in contemporary African fashion.
Her work has been featured in publications including Vogue Portugal, Glamour South Africa, GQ South Africa, Business of Fashion, Daily Maverick, OkayAfrica, and other platforms.
